Monkey Island, Story 4
Jumpy's baby, Joey, was growing up very quickly. I still remember the first time he looked over the edge of his mummy's pouch. I noticed his tiny, furry ears protruding cautiously. Then two very curious dark eyes followed. After the darkness of his mum’s pouch, Joey was probably frightened by the big, bright world. It did not take long at all for Joey to grow up. You could see an arm, then a leg sticking out of the pouch. It was becoming a tight space in which to live.
I helped with the chores, as I had promised. Nappy changes were not really very exciting, especially when they happened a few times a day. It always seemed to be when we were ready to go out! Eventually, Joey became old enough to leave his beloved pouch from time to time.
I suggested we should take a trip to Monkey Island. Jumpy and Joey loved the idea. We packed nappies, which are the most important item, a bottle, a dummy, a change of clothes (in case Joey got into mischief), some crunchies for myself and fruit for our picnic.
At the harbour we boarded our "ship," which was a very big, lady hippopotamus, who had seats strapped to her back. After paying for our ticket with a bag full of carrots, we boarded her and departed. Our trip was very slow, so we did not get seasick. Being seasick is awful. You cannot be elegant when you feel bad!
Well, so far, so good. In the distance, you could see the palm trees on Monkey Island. Three dolphins swam next to us, trying to talk to Jumpy, whom they called "pretty lady." They had never seen a kangaroo on the water before! I had never been to the sea.
I thought it was just a big lake. During our crossing, I became thirsty and filled a cup with seawater to drink. Imagine my surprise. It was very salty, and I had to spit and spit and spit! Never drink sea water! It's a bad experience, but good for your skin. I dangled my feet in the salty water and they said to me, "We like it!" Do you believe that? Just testing, to see if you are paying attention. Ha! Ha!
After our arrival, we walked to the center of the island. There was a lot of entertainment. Several chimpanzees played music with sticks and drums. Some of their girls were singing with very funny voices. Joey wanted to go on a camel ride. Since he was too small to go alone, I had to tag along with him. Joey is used to his mummy's jumping, but I almost got seasick on the camel with his back-and-forth swaying motion. Some people call camels ‘Ships of the Desert.’!
Some time later, we decided to have a picnic under a palm tree. We unpacked our basket and laid everything neatly on a large blanket. When I turned my back for a moment, a cheeky monkey quickly jumped down from the tree and stole some of our bananas. I tried to chase him, but while we were distracted, another monkey grabbed little Joey and went right up the tree with him. Now this was going too far. Our lovely, little boy was in danger!
"What can we do?" Jumpy cried in despair. What could we do? I am able to climb trees, but not as fast as a monkey does. There were many of them, and the mad monkeys were using Joey for a toy. How terrible! An accident could happen at any time.
Finally I had an idea. I offered the remaining bananas to the monkeys. “Come down with Joey and I’ll give you the bananas," I said. The monkeys started chattering amongst themselves. Then one of them shook his head. No! They were having fun with Joey and, still had the stolen bananas. I took all of our apples out of the bag as well. I could see their eyes light up with greed. After some more discussions, one of them brought Joey, upside down, by his tail. He dropped him and quickly grabbed the fruit. Within seconds, everything was gone, and we had nothing left to eat.
Naughty monkeys, jumping, stealing
Taking Joey without feeling
Climbing up and down the tree
Finally, they let him free.
After this uncalled-for excitement, we still enjoyed another few hours of less exciting entertainment. Finally, everybody was tired, so we returned home. We had lots to dream about that night! Sweet dreams to you, darling! "Monkeybye!" says your elegant friend!
